Né à Strasbourg (France) en 1968, Sébastien Fath est historien, chercheur au Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Il est marié, et père de trois enfants. Titulaire de la Médaille de Bronze du CNRS (2004), il appartient au Groupe Sociétés Religions Laïcités. Auteur de quatorze ouvrages (dont quatre ouvrages collectifs), il a notamment enseigné à l’EPHE (Sorbonne) et à l’Université d’Edimbourg (2004-2005).

Normalien (1989), agrégé d’histoire (1992), son premier travail de recherche (finalement publié en 1999) porte sur les relations franco-iraniennes. Il consacre son doctorat EPHE, sous la direction de Jean-Paul Willaime (1998), à la socio-histoire du baptisme en France.

Il entre ensuite au CNRS (1999) et devient membre statutaire du Groupe Sociétés Religions laïcités (GSRL). Son terrain de spécialisation est l’étude du protestantisme évangélique. Dans ce domaine, il a successivement étudié le baptisme, le prédicateur Billy Graham, la Bible Belt (Sud des Etats-Unis), les relations politique et religion aux Etats-Unis, l’évangélisme français et les megachurches.

Son champ de recherche s’est élargi, au cours des dernières années, aux nouveaux enjeux religion / laïcité au travers des mutations de l’immigration et des défis de l’interculturalité en contexte urbain (terrain de l’île de France).

Il est successivement responsable du programme GSRL "Protestantisme évangélique et pentecôtiste" (entre 2002 et 2005), puis du programme GSRL "Religions et religiosités minoritaires en ultramodernité" (2006-2009). Avec Martine Cohen, il conduit actuellement le programme GSRL "Dieu change à Paris, les mutations religieuses et laïques en Île de France"( entre 2010-2013)

Born in Strasbourg (France) in 1968, Sebastien Fath is a historian and social scientist, researcher fellow at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). He is married and father of three children. Awarded with the CNRS Bronze Medal in 2004, he belongs to the French research team GSRL (Groupe Sociétés Religions Laïcités). Author of 14 books (including four collective works), he has been notably teaching at the EPHE (Sorbonne University) and at Edinburgh University (2004-2005).His first history work was focused on the French-Iranian relations in the 1960s (published in 1999).

After his Ph. D. on French Baptist History (directed by Prof. Jean-Paul Willaime), he enters the CNRS in 1999, and becomes full member of the GSRL research team (located in Paris). His main field of research is Evangelicalism. He published successively on French Baptists, Billy Graham, the Bible Belt (US religion in the Southern States, religion and politics in the USA, French Evangelicalism and megachurches.

His research perimeter got wider in recent years, including new challenges for religions and laïcity (secularism) through the study of the impact of immigration and interculturality in a urban context (Paris area).

From 2002 to 2005, he led the GSRL Program "Evangelicals and Pentecostals". From 2006 to 2009, he led the GSRL Program "Religions and religious minorities in ultramodernity". With Martine Cohen, he is currently leading the new GSRL Program "God is changing in Paris : religious mutations in the Paris urban area"
