Hangzhou 杭州
Hangzhou has long been a major Daoist center. In late imperial times, central temples run by the elite families of Zhengyi priests, such as the Wushan Chenghuang miao 吳山城隍廟 and the Dongyue miao 東嶽廟 were the venue for official ceremonies and massive popular festivals, such as the “trial of the insane” (shen fengzi 審瘋子) that aimed to cure mentally ill persons. Temples founded by Quanzhen Daoists also played a role in propagating self-cultivation technique and healing, such as Fuxing guan 福星觀 on Yuhuang shan and the Baopu daoyuan 抱朴道院. Today, the Fuxing guan and Baopu daoyuan are open and operated by the Daoist association, while a new Dongyue temple is run by the neighborhood association. Of course, like in other Chinese cities, there also are Daoists working from home who are occasionally invited to perform in temples.
The T&T project principal investigator in the Hangzhou site are Prof. Kong Linghong孔令宏, Dr. Fang Ling方玲 and Han Songtao 韩松涛. The pictures below show the New Year pilgrims at Fuxing guan in 2007, and a Daoist at work in the "Old Eastern Peak temple"; Laodongyue, in 2002.
