Wuhan 武漢

The city of Wuhan is home to one of the late imperial twenty-odd China-wide network of public Quanzhen monasteries (conglin 叢林): the Changchun guan長春觀; but the city’s communal celebrations also drew on hereditary Daoist families linked to the various communities of merchants and sojourners (Hunan, Jiangxi…); the T&T project investigates these various Daoist traditions and their role in urban festivals and religious life. Furthermore, Wuhan is close to the center of a vibrant cult to Xuantian shangdi with urban pilgrims going to Wudang shan 武當山 or closer, to Mulan shan木蘭山.

The main investigator of the T&T project in Wuhan are Dr. Mei Li, who is a specialist of the Xuantian shangdi cult in the Hubei area, and Prof. Liu Xun, who also works on the Nanyang site. The pictures below were taken on Mulan shan in 2007.
